Ancient Orhei is an important archaeological area that presents the remains of different civilizations established between the Nistru and Prut rivers. Orheuil Vechi is an archaeological site located near the village of Trebujeni, 60 kilometers from Chisinau. This place preserves the vestiges of the historical populations that civilized Moldova. In the narrow and rocky valley of the Raut River the remains of the first human settlements can be seen. At the top of a hill stood an important fortification (5th - 3rd century BC), built by the Geto-Dacians, a population who already had their own calendar at that time. Among the ruins of this fortification the site of this ancient calendar is still visible, which probably also served as an altar, with ritual purposes. On the opposite side of the river you can distinguish the remains of a new settlement of the Golden Horde called Sheihr-di Gedid, dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. According to researchers, it is considered one of the capitals of the Tatar peoples during their expansion into Europe. After these territories were reconquered by some Moldavian tribes, a new fortress was built (15th century AD) called Orhei. The foundations are still visible. An Orthodox monastery carved into the rock dedicated to Santa Maria Dormiente also arose in this area. Over the centuries this sacred place was modified and extended by the monks who kept it functioning for a long time. Now it is a destination for tourists throughout the year and in particular during religious holidays. In the mid-17th century, for strategic reasons, the city of Orhei was moved 18 km north of Raut, to the gorge called Vasile Lupu, on the orders of the king of Moldavia. This has helped preserve the vestiges of ancient civilizations in a true open-air museum. Here tourists can also visit a museum dedicated to peasant civilization and a nature reserve. The most interesting and picturesque area is located in the villages of Butuceni and Trebujeni adjacent to the town of Ivancea. Of memorable beauty are the rock monasteries dug into the tuff of the hills that flank the valley of the Raut river. The area, which is very fertile, has some stretches of territory covered by woods (Codrii Orheiului) with multicolored trees which during the changes of season offer the visitor an incredible variety of shades. The green landscape is interrupted by small lakes which are located a short distance from each other. Orheiul Vechi is without a doubt the most famous cultural historical place in Moldova of particular importance.

The Cricova cellar boasts the world record for having the longest series of underground roads used for storing wine. Cricova, however, is not only a wine warehouse but is also considered the best company for the production of sparkling wines obtained with the Champennois method which during the Soviet era were sold and tasted throughout the Union and in the rest of the communist world.
